Slate & Gold: A Signature Harvest Friday at Clos Mogador, Priorat

There are vineyards you visit, and there are vineyards that visit you back — that stay under your skin like a secret. This morning I woke above the village of Gratallops, in Catalonia's DOQ Priorat, where the vines cling to near-vertical terraces of black Devonian slate called costers, and the whole valley smells at this very moment of crushed garnacha and rain-dampened stone. This is peak vendimia: the last, most precious fruit of 2026 is coming off the hillsides this week, and I timed my Friday pilgrimage to be exactly here for it. Clos Mogador is hallowed ground — the estate René Barbier III founded in 1979, whose first acclaimed 1989 vintage (made jointly with the other great "Clos" pioneers) lit the fuse of the entire modern Priorat renaissance. Today the same 13 hectares of licorella shine like spilled obsidian under the October sun.

So walk with me through a full day of it: dawn in the vines, dusk on the terrace, and everything the slate and the glass whispered in between.

🍇 Scene 1 — Dawn Twirl Among the Costers

The mist was still lifting off the Montsant massif when I climbed into the terraces, my blush-rose silk dress swishing against dew-wet vines. I reached for a cluster of ripe garnacha — and honestly, I couldn't help it, I spun. When the light hit the slate and my skirt caught the wind all at once, I laughed out loud at nothing and everything. This is what the start of a perfect day tastes like.

🍷 Scene 2 — A Bottle Held to the Cellar Light

By afternoon I'd followed the barrels down into the estate's stone cellar, where a single shaft of golden light cuts the dark like a spotlight meant only for me. They poured the new Manyetes — the Vi de Paratge from the old Manyetes parcel, around 90% Cariñena from 80-year-old vines, slumbering sixteen months in French oak — and I did the thing every wine romantic does: lifted the bottle right into the beam and squinted through it. Reading a label by candlelight is charming. Reading it by Priorat light, surrounded by that perfect barrel symmetry? Forgettable for no one.

🥂 Scene 3 — The Toast That Tasted Like Dusk

Then the day folded itself into gold and violet, as it insists on doing here, and I climbed to the terrace above the estate in a deep-garnet satin gown — a small salute to the garnacha in my glass. I walked toward the camera mid-stride, glass raised high, laughing like someone who knows exactly how lucky this Friday is. Below me, the last sun moved across the ridgelines of the valley, and the 2026 harvest seemed to exhale. To the slate, to the vines, to you.

✨ Clos Mogador Tasting Notes & Travel Tips

  • Wine Featured: Clos Mogador (flagship red — Garnacha-led blend with Cariñena, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah from licorella soils) and Manyetes, the Vi de Paratge of ~90% old-vine Cariñena aged 16 months in 50% new French oak. White-wine romantics, hunt down Nelin, first made in 2000 — Garnacha blanca laced with Marsanne, Roussanne and Viognier.
  • Best Time to Visit: Mid-September to mid-October — vendimia — when the costers are golden and the air smells of fermenting garnacha. My Friday landed on the final garnacha picks.
  • Getting There: Fly into Barcelona, drive ~2.5 hours southwest to Gratallops (Tarragona province). Book tastings well ahead — Priorat's estates are small and the winding hills reward slow plans. DOQ Priorat is one of only two top-tier DOCa/DOQ regions in all of Spain.
  • What to Wear: Something that moves — silk, satin, a hemline that dares the tramontane wind. Slate dust and satin are an unexpectedly perfect pair, trust me.

💋 So, my darlings: which continent should my little red suitcase flirt with next? I've been hearing whispers about a certain island where the vines grow in volcanic coils... bring your best glass, I'll bring the sunset. 💋
